These are the frozen fish and seafood items I always grab from ALDI Australia and keep in my freezer.
This isn't sponsored by ALDI. It's just genuinely what I buy and keep coming back to and had a few people asking about.
I love being able to buy fresh fish from a good fishmonger, and I used to have an amazing one that I would always go to. Unfortunately, they're no longer there and I haven't found another one I love quite as much yet or that is affordable.
But I also really like keeping frozen fish and other proteins in the freezer because it makes putting dinner together so much easier.
I can pull something out of the freezer, add a few vegetables and potatoes, rice or whatever else I have on hand, and I've got a pretty simple dinner without needing to make a special trip to the shops.
And with the cost of groceries being what it is at the moment, having a few more affordable options in the freezer can make a big difference. Pricing below is as of 18.08.2026 in Australia
Aldi's Ocean Royale Fish is also sustainably sourced, all the fish is sourced in different ways though so feel free to check each item for the practices.
The frozen fish I always buy from ALDI
There are a few different frozen fish and seafood options I tend to pick up, depending on what I'm planning to make.
ALDI peeled prawns
The first thing I always have in my freezer is the peeled, deveined prawns.
I particularly like buying the deveined ones because it makes them so easy to use. There's no much prep involved, so I can just grab a portion from the freezer when I want to make something with prawns.
They're currently $13.49 for 500g, which I think is a pretty good option if you enjoy prawns but don't want to buy them fresh every time.
I use them for things like quick prawn dinners, pasta, rice dishes, skewers and anything else where I want a protein that cooks really quickly.
Being able to keep them frozen also means I'm more likely to actually use prawns during the week rather than having to plan a meal around buying them fresh. And I personally have had some bad experiences with the supermarket fresh ones so I try to avoid them.
ALDI barramundi
The more expensive option of the three is the skin-on barramundi but personally I go for this.
It's currently $19.99 for 500g, so it's quite a jump from the basa, but I still think it's a reasonable option compared with buying fresh barramundi.
I really like having this one in the freezer for nights when I want to have a protein but don't feel like chicken or meat.
The skin also gets lovely and crisp when cooked properly, which is one of my favourite ways to eat it.
ALDI basa fillets
The most budget-friendly fish option that is available is the basa fillets.
They're $6.99 for 500g, so they're considerably cheaper than some of the other frozen fish options.
Basa is a thinner, mild fish, which makes it quite easy to cook and use in simple weeknight dinners.
It's also worth mentioning something that came up when I shared these on Instagram.
Someone pointed out that Basa is a type of catfish and that these fish can be sourced from countries such as China or Indonesia. That's a fair point to raise, and it's something worth being aware of rather than me pretending that every frozen fish option is the same.
At the same time, I think there's another side to this conversation and not all Basa is the same or sourced in the same way.
Not everyone can afford to buy fresh Australian fish or more expensive options every week. For some people, a $6.99 pack of frozen fish may genuinely be one of the few fish options that fits into their grocery budget.
That's actually one of the reasons I wanted to share these.
I'm not saying you have to buy them, and I'm not saying they're the perfect option for everyone. I'm simply sharing what is available and what I have used or keep in my freezer.
Just like buying organic vegetables is not an option for a lot of people.
Why I keep frozen fish in my freezer
For me, having frozen fish isn't about replacing fresh fish altogether. It's about having options.
Having frozen prawns or fish means I can look in the fridge, see what vegetables I have, grab something from the freezer and make a meal from there if needed.
It's also one of those things I think is really useful when you're trying to keep your grocery shop practical.
You don't need to buy every protein fresh every week. Some things are perfectly useful to have sitting in the freezer until you need them. And proteins is one I always keep in the freezer.
Are these ALDI frozen fish options responsibly sourced?
The packaging on these products states that they are responsibly sourced.
I always think it's worth looking at those claims and the information on the packaging rather than assuming that every product with a sustainability claim automatically means exactly the same thing.
I'm also not an expert in seafood sourcing, so I'm not going to pretend I can give you a definitive assessment of every fishery or supply chain involved.
What I can tell you is what I buy and why.
For me, these are affordable freezer options that make it easier to include fish and seafood in my meals without having to buy fresh fish every time and they are stated as responsibly sourced which some frozen fish is not.
Easy dinners with frozen fish
The best thing about keeping these in the freezer is that you don't need an elaborate recipe to use them.
I often think of the fish as the starting point and then build dinner around whatever I already have.
Think:
- Fish with crispy potatoes and vegetables
- Barramundi with a simple salad and chips
- Prawns with rice and vegetables
- Prawn pasta
- Fish tacos or wraps
- Prawns with a quick sauce and some greens
- Fish with a simple coriander salsa verde
It doesn't have to be complicated.
Sometimes dinner really is just fish, potatoes and some vegetables.
My ALDI frozen fish picks
So if you're looking for some affordable frozen fish to keep in the freezer, these are the three I personally would recommend:
Peeled, deveined prawns: $13.49 for 500g
Basa fillets: $6.99 for 500g
Skin-on barramundi: $19.99 for 500g
Prices can change, so check your local ALDI store for the current price.
I wouldn't say these are the only frozen fish options worth buying, but they're the ones I regularly pick up and keep in my own freezer.
Food doesn't have to be perfect or expensive to be useful. Sometimes having an affordable bag of frozen fish in the freezer is exactly what makes getting dinner on the table that little bit easier.
