Steak Sandwiches are such a great option to make no whether it's a busy weeknight or a BBQ type weekend. They are simple and easy to make yet so delicious and can be easily customised without having to change anything, switch up a sauce, add beetroot etc.
Ingredients
-
4 Pieces of Sourdough Bread
-
1 Onion sliced
-
1 Tomato
-
2 - 3 Lettuce Leaves
-
4 Pieces of Cheese or 2 Pre Sliced
-
200g of Steak* I use Black Angus
-
2 Tsp of Mayonnaise or Aioli*
-
2 Tsp of BBQ Sauce*
-
2 Pickles Sliced
-
2-3 Tsp of Olive Oil
Directions
🥪 Slice your onion & cook in a pan with about 1 tsp of oil on low for about 15 minutes until they are caramelised, stirring continuously. We want them to cook low and slow to caramelise not burn
🥪 While they are cooking slice up a tomato, prep your lettuce leaves, I leave mine whole but chop if you like, chop a few slices of cheese. And if using whole pickles slice them up
🥪 Once the onions are nearly done add your steak to the pan with a little splash of oil but turn the heat up for the steak, you can remove the onions if needed or if they start to burn. Cook the steak to your liking I like mine medium/rare so I don’t overcook it. Once its cook pop it on a plate or chopping board to rest
🥪 Toast your bread if not super fresh
- 🥪 I like to add some sauce onto the bread once toasted instead of butter but this is a personal preference. I used a squeeze of burger sauce on each side, you can use mayo or any sauce or just butter
🥪 Slice your steak into strips & add you steak to the bread, onions a squeeze of bbq sauce, the pickles & then add the salad and cheese

Expert Tips, Variations & FAQs:
- Having a good quality steak makes all the difference with this recipe and the amount you use will depend on the bread you have. I use around 100g per sandwich.
- You can cook the steak in a pan or even on the BBQ to get that grilled flavour, I don't add seasoning but feel free to add some if you want a different flavour
- You can add any sauce you like to this one, if you prefer tomato use that, if you have a favourite Aioli you can use that instead of a bbq sauce etc. It is a great way to switch up the flavour without switching up anything you are cooking so everyone can have their own versions
- You can also add beetroot, cucumber etc if you like. Any type of salad works great on here
- I add the thin layer of sauce on the outside as it also helps to protect the bread from any juice etc coming from the steak
- Switch up the bread for this one too, it would work great on a crusty roll
